2023 Claudio Vio Vino da Tavola - Runcu Brujau

Regular price $29.00

In Stock: 7

Claudio Vio’s home, organically-farmed vineyards, and winery sit atop the mountains that divide Liguria from Piemonte, outside the half-deserted village called Vedone. There’s mountain scrub, gravelly soils, some rare olive tree varieties, and a patchwork of vines that add up to just two hectares. This part of Liguria is best known for the white grapes pigato and vermentino (we have the latter from Claudio in stock as well), but locals grow some red grapes to make equally lithesome, refreshing red wines. Runcu Brüjau is Ligurian dialect for ‘burned escarpment’; the vineyard is prone to wildfires, which thankfully have been kept at bay in recent years. The wine is a blend of rossese (indigenous to western Liguria), ormeasco (= dolcetto in nearby in Piemonte), and granaccia (= grenache in nearby southeast France), fermented and aged for about half a year in stainless steel tanks. It has red fruits, wild herbs, and Ligurian Alpine vibrancy, including tangy acidity and low tannin. Chill it a little or a lot. This is another Thanksgiving-perfect fall wine, but you needn’t stop there. Basil pesto, pissaladière, or even seafood would all work well, and would take you on an enogastronomic journey to the Riviera.
