Herdade do Mouchão is in Alentejo (the region east of Lisbon). They started as a cork farm, planted vineyards in the mid-1800s, and bottled their first vintage in 1949. Tinto 'Dom Rafael' is a blend of alicante bouschet, aragonez, trincadeira, and castelão. The grapes were foot-trod and fermented in lagares, the traditional open stone troughs of Portugal. The wine then aged for a year in a variety of barrel sizes for a year. The wine is dark-fruited and smoky, tempered by bright acidity and a whisper of tannin. Try it with Korean galbi or eggplant; the producer also suggests Portugal’s famed bacalhau.
