Roccamonfina is an extinct volcano and IGT (wine appellation) in the province of Caserta, an hour north of Naples by car. Diana Iannacone and her husband, Mario Basco, are proprietors of her family’s 18th-century farmstead 'I Cacciagalli' (“the rooster hunters”). Besides wine grapes, they grow hazelnuts, olives, chickpeas, and other crops. Their farming is certified biodynamic, and winemaking is decidedly low-intervention. They also run a fantastic agriturismo/wine resort and restaurant on the property. 'Mille' recalls Garibaldi’s thousand soldiers who fought for the unification of Italy, which Garibaldi formalized in a meeting with King Vittorio Emanuele II in the town of Teano, near I Cacciagalli. The wine is majority piedirosso, a variety that thrives in Campania’s volcanic terroirs, with smaller amounts of pallagrello nero and aglianico. It was vinified and aged in concrete tanks and bottled without fining or filtration. In the glass, the wine exudes dark, smoky fruits with an herbal and volcanic mineral edge, yet it’s still quite lifted and fresh - and just 12.5% alcohol. Chill it for 20-30 minutes to enhance the freshness. It will complement a pizza (especially wood-fired), most anything on the grill, and dishes involving capsicum/paprika.
