Three brothers - Jonas, Lukas, and Philipp Seckinger - farm 20 hectares near Deidesheim in Germany’s Pfalz region. Their farming is certified organic and practicing biodynamic. ‘R Chardonnay Pur’ comes from two vineyards with yellow and red sandstone soils. Spontaneous, whole-cluster fermentation and 10 months of élevage in 225-liter old German oak barrels. Some barrels are not topped up and undergo a controlled oxidation under flor. There’s no filtration and no added sulfites (ØØ). This wine is the antithesis of what most people either love or hate about chardonnay: it’s cloudy, salty, savory, slightly oxidative (think Jura), and just 12% alcohol. There’s some fruit, but it’s not about the fruit. It’s a wine to drink thoughtfully, over several hours; if you drink it too quickly, you’ll miss the fascinating and delicious evolution.
