Precedent is the personal project of Nathan Kandler, winemaker for Thomas Fogarty Winery, the storied Santa Cruz Mountains producer. For Precedent, Nathan focuses on grapes that were popular in California before chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and pinot noir took over starting in the 1960s. As he points out, chenin blanc was the most widely-planted white grape in California up until the mid-1990s. This chenin is from the Handley Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains (not to be confused with Handley Cellars in Anderson Valley). It spends about a year on the lees in old 500-liter puncheons. There are pear and floral aromas, with texture and weight on the palate that’s held in line by the wine’s vibrant acidity. This is a great quality-price ratio, classic California white. Drink it with moules-frites, trout, or posole.
