Pedralonga (= “big rock” in Gallego) is Miguel Alfonso’s organic vineyard and winery in the Rías Baixas coastal area of Galicia. The rocky and sandy granitic soils and cool, ocean-influenced climate make it ideal for growing albariño, and Pedralonga is especially well known for theirs. But there is a little red wine, too - made from majority mencía with a little caiño and espadeiro (two other local red varieties). Indigenous fermentation, with some whole grape clusters, and then aging on the lees for a year both took place in stainless steel tanks. The wine shows ultra-fresh red fruits and forest floor flavors - like the autumn leaf on the label! It is tasty, tangy, and supremely refreshing at just 12% alcohol. Try it with herb-roasted fowl, lentils, or even fattier fishes.
