Domaine Belargus is a new Loire Valley estate formed in 2019 with a single focus on chenin blanc and the different terroirs for it in the Middle Loire Valley (including Anjou). “Belargus” is a rare species of brilliantly blue-winged butterfly that inhabits the vineyards. The “Noir” in AnjouNoir refers not to the color of the grapes but to the dark color of the schist-and-shale-rich soils in the western half of the Anjou appellation. This wine is a blend of 100% chenin blanc from four parcels. Farming is organic and biodynamic. Indigenous fermentation and 15 months of élevage on the lees in a combination of stainless steel and used barrels. The wine is lithe, lively, mineral, and dry, balanced with chenin’s signature texture. Drink it with fish soups, saucy chicken and pork dishes, or goat cheeses.
