2019 Mount Eden Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Pinot Noir
Regular price $78.00
Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains is among California’s truly historic wineries, and one that continues to produce benchmark pinot noir, chardonnay, and cabernet sauvignon from high-altitude vineyards. Santa Cruz Mountains wine pioneer Martin Ray first planted the site, at 2000 meters, above Santa Clara Valley, in the 1940s. Jeffrey Patterson was hired as assistant winemaker in 1981, took over in 1984, and continues to run the estate today. Mount Eden Vineyards remains a family winery, with the participation of Jeffrey’s former wife Ellie Davis and their children Sophie and Reid. You can read the full and fascinating history on Mount Eden’s website.
Their Estate Pinot Noir comes from seven acres of vines planted in rocky Franciscan shale. Spontaneous fermentation is with one-third whole clusters. The wine then ages for about a year in Burgundy barrels (50% new and 50% second passage). It’s bottled without fining or filtration. The nose has floral and earthy notes along with soft red fruits. The palate is supple, precise, and completely satisfying. Drink this California classic now or in three to 10 years with any of your favorite pinot noir foods, including duck, mushrooms, or salmon.
