2019 Moric Hidden Treasures NR3 Villa Tolnay Balaton

"Hidden Treasures" is a project initiated by Roland Velich of the famed Austrian producer Moric to highlight great terroirs and lesser-known producers in Hungary, where his ancestors hail from. NR3 is the third wine in the project - a partnership with Philipp Oser of Villa Tolnay on Lake Balaton in western Hungary. The wine is a blend of Riesling and Furmint (roughly 50/50), grown in basalt-rich volcanic soils. Indigenous fermentation and aging happen in a combination of used larger barrels and stainless steel. 12.5% alcohol. It is arguably more Riesling-esque on the nose (stone fruits with mineral and floral notes) and more Furmint in the mouth (salty and darker minerality, slightly herbal, with great texture and acidity). This wine is a great blend - of producers, grapes, and flavors.
