Baker Lane is the 20-year wine and olive oil project of Stephen Singer, a central character and prime mover of the Bay Area wine and food scene for the past 40 years. His cool-climate estate vineyard is tucked away in the rolling hills of Sebastopol, near the West Sonoma Coast. It was planted in 2003 with six different clones of syrah, plus a little viognier and some olive trees. Farming is sustainable, regenerative, and uncertified organic. The Estate Vineyard Syrah includes a couple percent of viognier (a common practice in the Northern Rhône) and was aged for about two years in 450-liter puncheons - a combination of new, second-use, and neutral barrels. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep, saturated blue and black fruits, with syrah’s signature smoke, smoked meat, and black pepper aromas. Medium tannins and more prominent acidity, along with the balanced 13.5% alcohol, make for a wine that’s fresh and food-friendly. The wine drinks well now, especially with an hour in a decanter. It certainly will continue to evolve in a positive way for at least 10 years. Drink it with any and all grilled meats, lamb shawarma (try the one from Shawarmaji in downtown Oakland, if you haven’t already), or eggplant.
