2017 Domaine Serrigny Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru - Les Peuillets

Fourth generation grower Marie Laure Serrigny runs this 7-hectare Burgundy estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The domain has just over two acres of vines in the limestone-rich Premier Cru vineyard of Peuillets ("poi-yā", with a long 'ā'), planted in 1965. About half the grapes are de-stemmed prior to spontaneous fermentation in wooden upright vats. Élevage is in older barrels for about fourteen months. This is lovely, perfumed, elegant red Burgundy, on the lighter-bodied side of the spectrum (but by no means light in flavor!). Have it with coq au vin, seared duck breast with pomegranate molasses, or the wonderful Soumaintrain Berthaut cheese (a milder relative of Epoisses).
