Jason and Molly Drew started Drew in 2000, planting vines as well as working with other vineyards in the cool-climate Mendocino Ridge and Anderson Valley appellations. Their GSM Field Blend might better be named SGMV, as it’s syrah-dominant, with small percentages of grenache, mourvèdre, and viognier. The grapes come from three organically-farmed, high-altitude vineyards: Valenti Ranch, McDowell, and Perli. Fermentation was 100% whole clusters. The wine is mostly classic cool-climate syrah: leaner dark fruits, black pepper, cured meat, and floral notes, but with some red fruit and extra spice from the other varieties. It’s a perfect wine for a crisp fall day, yet still gracefully framed at 13.2% alcohol. Bring on the roasted meats or smoked eggplant dishes.
