How could anyone not be happy drinking a rosé from Happy Canyon? Vogelzang is one of half a dozen vineyards in the tiny Happy Canyon AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Santa Barbara County. Liquid Farm is a winery in Los Olivos that produces wines of moderate alcohol, preserved natural acidity, and minimal manipulation. Their Vogelzang rosé is 100% mourvèdre, organically grown. The wine is fermented in neutral oak barrels and aged a few months in stainless steel tanks. 11.5% alcohol. It’s crisp and aromatic, with tense citrus fruit - think grapefruit skin and pith, plus mandarin orange. This wine is a valid California take on Bandol rosé. It’s good on a warm-ish afternoon on the deck, as well as with jambalaya and other jazzy specialties.
