Francesco Brigatti is a third-generation producer in Northern Piemonte, close to Lago Maggiore and the Alps. Colline Novaresi, the Hills of Novara, is a broad, general-purpose Alto Piemontese wine appellation that includes the more specific appellations of Ghemme and Boca, among others. And uva rara is a red variety that’s planted across Piemonte and Lombardia. It’s often blended with nebbiolo. Here we have the opportunity to drink it on its own, fermented with only brief skin maceration and aged in stainless steel. The nose is a pepper party!: black pepper, white pepper, pink pepper… pick your pepper. It’s light-bodied and light-red-fruited, with moderate acidity, low tannin, and a faintly floral finish. It’s great with all kinds of salumi and five-spice dishes.
