Nebbiolo, much of it from the Langhe in southern Piemonte, is one of the staples of our store - and our tables and cellars. But Alto Piemonte, an hour and a half north of the Langhe and in the foothills of the Alps, was historically an equally important zone for nebbiolo and is becoming so again. With climate change bearing down on growers farther south, northern Piemonte’s cooler nights have become a decided asset in producing fresher, lower-alcohol nebbiolo-based wines that retain that variety’s signature complexity and age-worthiness. This wine is a great example. Le Piane is an historic producer in the DOC/appellation of Boca. Christoph Künzli, a transplanted wine lover and importer from Switzerland, took over in 1998. Colline Novaresi (“the Hills of Novara”) is a broad DOC that includes Boca; more or less as Langhe Nebbiolo is to Barbaresco or Barolo farther south. This is Alpine "lunch Nebbiolo" with a dash of vespolina (another local red variety). It’s peppery, light, and lifted, with fresh acidity, a little grip, and just 13% alcohol. This is a lovely, refreshing nebbiolo that’s perfect on these warming spring days, with or without some meat or veggies on the grill.
