Mount Vesuvius is Naples’s backyard and, as PMW’s Emilia Aiello notes, “Italy’s scariest volcano” - think Pompeii and Herculaneum. It’s also an amazing place for wine, thanks to the young volcanic soils, interesting indigenous grape varieties, and ungrafted vines (phylloxera can’t survive in the sandy volcanic soils.) Villa Dora is the passion project of Vincenzo Ambrosio and now his nephew Vincenzo Orabona. 'Vigna del Vulcano' is 100% caprettone, a hyper-local Vesuvian white variety that’s definitely worth getting to know. Farming of the 70-year-old vines is certified organic. The wine ferments and then spends half a year in stainless steel tanks before bottling. It just smells stony, flinty, and a little infernal (in a good way!). It’s medium bodied, with orchard fruits and loads of minerals in the mouth. The producer suggests drinking it with octopus salad. Any briny seafood preparation should do, or linguine al limone.
