La Staffa is the name of Riccardo Baldi’s artisanal, certified organic vineyards and winery in the Castelli di Jesi appellation of the Marche. Verdicchio is the white grape of the Marche and certainly among Italy’s greates white varieties. It’s capable of making everything from simple, satisfying everyday wines to profound, complex, and age-worthy wines. This is an example of the latter.
'Rincrocca' is the name of Baldi’s most important vineyard. It is high-altitude (450 meters) and was planted in 1972, so these are 50+ year old vines. The wine was fermented and aged for a year on the lees in concrete vats and then aged further in bottle before release. The wine has a full spectrum of citrus, herbal, and floral components, with distinctive power and texture and a flinty finish. Drink it as a super-elegant aperitivo or with richer seafood dishes or pasta with lemon and garlic.
