If you want to have some ampelological fun, look up “zinfandel” in Jancis’s Robinson’s essential tome Wine Grapes. From there you are directed to tribidrag, and in that entry you can read the tortuous tale of how California’s zinfandel came to be identified with Puglia’s primitivo and then both zinfandel and primitivo with Croatia’s tribidrag (a.k.a. crljenak kaštelanski!). Anyway, Mariangela Plantamura’s family has been growing primitivo for over a century in the Gioia del Colle subregion of Puglia, just south of Bari. She and her husband, Vincenzo, began bottling their own wine in 2002. Their vineyards are certified organic, and they employ a light tough in the cellar. 'Parco Largo' is their young-vine primitivo, with a short maceration (7-10 days) and aging in stainless steel tanks for about six months. The wine has robust red and black fruits with spice and earth but no jamminess. The modest tannins and good freshness make it a versatile food wine, including with tomato-based pizzas and pastas, eggplant, or mole sauces.
