Colombera & Garella is the collaboration of Cristiano Garella, the leader of the Alto Piemontese renaissance, with his long-time friend Giacomo Colombera and Giacomo’s father, Carlo, in Bramaterra. Together, they make wines from vineyards in both Bramaterra (rusty-red, iron-rich volcanic sand) and Lessona (pale yellow marine sand) - two utterly different terroirs that you can walk between in 15 minutes. Lessona 'Pizzaguerra' (= “Pizzawar”, the odd surname of the family that formerly owned the vineyard) is a blend of 95% nebbiolo and 5% vespolina that co-fermented and macerated with the skins for a month in large concrete tanks. It then spent two years aging in 2000-liter used Slavonian oak barrels. This is high-toned, mineral nebbiolo with herbal and floral tones. Vespolina’s signature white pepper aroma comes through even at this small percentage. As is often the case with Alto Piemontesi nebbioli, the structure comes at least as much from acidity as from tannin. And it’s just 13% alcohol. Drink it in a Burgundy or other wide stem with Easter lamb, wild mushroom risotto, or Alpine cheeses. The wine is drinking great now, but it will age positively for at least 5-10 years.
