Regular price $22.00

Andrea Matrone’s family has been tending vines and making wine on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, in Naples’ backyard, since at least the 1700s. In fact, the main road leading up to the volcano’s (still -active) caldera is named after the family. Andrea and his cousin Francesco now practice organic farming in the sandy, highly volcanic soils of Vesuvius. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is one of the wine appellations for the volcano and refers to legends about Christ’s tears falling on Vesuvius, causing vines to sprout. Lacryma Christi must be a minimum 50% piedirosso, Vesuvius’s local red grape. Andrea’s version is 90% piedirosso, with 10% aglianico. It aged for 14 months in 500-liter tonneaux and then 10 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine has dark fruit, medium body, smoky minerality from the volcano, and some tannin. Drink it with meat ragù or a meaty and/or cheesy pizza. It’s also great with dishes featuring Hungarian paprika or Spanish pimentón.
