2018 Podere Campriano Chianti Classico Riserva
Regular price $36.00
Podere Campriano is Elena Lapini and Luca Polga’s tiny (2-hectare, 1500-case), fourth-generation, certified organic farm in Greve-in-Chianti. Chianti Classico Riserva 'Le Balze di Montefioralle' is 100% sangiovese from a northwest-facing limestone-rich plot that was planted in 1998. The wine fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for 14 months in a combination of 500-1000-liter older barrels. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered and aged for multiple years at the winery before release.
As a result the wine comes to us at a beautiful point in its development: relaxed and expressive, with the complexity of bottle age, yet still with plenty of vibrancy and precision. Aromas of cherry and forest floor (sottobosco in Italian), medium body, mild tannins, and good acidity make for an unmistakably Tuscan wine that will complement steak, mushrooms, or more savory tomato-based dishes. It is drinking beautifully now but should continue to develop positively for at least 3-5 years.
(By the way, Elena and Luca, like many Tuscan wine and olive oil producers, also offer accommodations in the form of an agriturismo - a rural B&B that’s part of a working farm. Agriturismos are the best way to explore the countryside all over Italy.)
