Garnacha/grenache grows all over Spain, but the most exciting place for it in the past couple of decades is the Sierra de Gredos, 150 kilometers west of Madrid. That’s due to the craggy, high-altitude vineyards, sandy-granite soils, old vines, and the focus among most producers on making wines of elegance and finesse rather than power and alcohol. 4 Monos (“4 Monkeys”) is composed of four friends who met while hiking in the Gredos Mountains. 'GR-10' is 90% garnacha, with a little cariñena and syrah, fermented with whole clusters and aged in old French oak barrels. Scintillating red fruits are complemented by just enough savoriness and just enough structure. It will be happy with anything on the grill, including sausages, spicy or not.
