Quinta do Pinto is a family winery less than an hour’s drive north from downtown Lisbon. It’s a blend of aragonêz, touriga nacional, tinta miúda, and alfrocheiro - all indigenous Portuguese red varieties. Indigenous fermentation is followed by about a year of aging, partly in older French barrels, and then a looooong time in bottle. Dark berry fruits with tertiary aromas of tar, earth, and leather. This 13-year old wine still has a bright, acidic spine, with supple tannins from the long bottle aging. It’s pleasingly rustic and a lot of wine for the money - a combination that Portugal seems to do especially well. Drink it with morcela (Portuguese blood sausage), a meat stew, or mushrooms.
