Goriška Brda (or Brda for short) is a wine appellation in western Slovenia, hugging the border with Italy and adjacent to the Italian Collio / Colli Orientali appellations. Brda is characterized by a soil type called ponca (in Italian) or opoka (in Slovenian): a melange of marl (limestone + clay) and sandstone with abundant marine fossils that lends an especially fresh acidity to wines. Movia is the Kristančič family’s certified organic and biodynamic winery founded in 1820, and certainly one of the best-known producers in the region. Cabernet sauvignon has a long history in this trans-border area, having been brought from France in the 1800s. Movia’s cabernet sauvignon underwent indigenous fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then aged for two years in French oak barrels. The wine exhibits high-toned black fruit with a light touch. It’s gently spicy and discreetly earthy - a cabernet sauvignon of real character and great drinkability (in part due to the low 13% alcohol). Drink it with fajitas or mushroom risotto.
