Amidst the wild and rugged landscapes that make up Corsica, the arid and largely empty Agriates (in French; Agriate in Corsican) is the only one that is categorized as a desert. Think dry and bush-covered, akin to the Eastern Sierra Nevada. The Giacometti family moved to this forbidding land in 1987 and now farms 35 hectares organically. The family style is fresh, easy-drinking wines that retain the wild character of the island. Their 'Cru des Agriate' is 97% nielluccio (= sangiovese) and 3% grenache, fermented and aged for 10 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine has sangiovese’s forest-floor flavors (earth, sand, pine, mushroom) in a more rocky frame, with more dark, brambly fruit than its Tuscan brothers. There is just enough tannin for meat on the grill, but you also can drink it with a spicy red sauce - maybe arrabbiata or harissa puttanesca. A slight chill (15-20 minutes) is a good idea.
