Moric ("MOR-itz") is Roland Velich’s project to elevate the quality and reputation of blaufränkisch in Burgenland, Austria. Hausmarke Rot (“house wine - red”) is a blend of blaufränkisch, zweigelt, and pinot noir - predominantly 2020, but with seven other vintages included in the blend - and listed on the label. Spontaneous fermentation took place in open vats, followed by aging in large oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered, and with tiny amounts of SO2 added. Blaufränkisch’s plummy, slightly smoky character leads the fruit parade, but there are plenty of other players, including earth, rock, flower, and herb. The wine is fresh yet complex, with appealing brightness and more than simple charm. 12.5% alcohol. Drink it alongside pasta with mushroom ragù or a winter soup.
