Moric ("MOR-itz") is Austrian wine superstar Roland Velich’s project to elevate the quality and reputation of blaufränkisch and grüner veltliner in Burgenland, Austria. Hausmarke Weiss (“house wine - white”) 'Supernatural' is mostly grüner veltliner with a splash of chardonnay, fermented in large wooden barrels. Malolactic fermentation happened naturally, and élevage was for 12-14 months in 5-10-year-old barrels of 500-600 liters. There was no filtration or clarification.
The nose is rich and redolent of orchard and citrus fruits, with a prominent flinty note. There is marked acidity, but also texture and a generous finish. The wine will excite lovers of classic, complex white wines from Burgundy and/or the Loire. Decant it for an hour or two, pour it into an ample wine glass, and drink it with fish stew or vegetable tagine. It also will repay bottle aging for 5-10 years.
