Gottfried Lamprecht is a human dynamo in the Vulkanland region in Southeast Austria, near the borders with Hungary and Slovenia. Buchertberg is a hill on the estate on which Gottfried has planted over a 100 different grape varieties, from which he makes a bunch of varietal wines and a white and a red Gemischter Satz (field blend). Farming is certified organic. 'Buchertberg Rot' is his red field blend. Blaufränkisch is dominant, with smaller amounts of St. Laurent, kadarka, pinot noir, and blauer wildbacher. All of the grapes co-fermented, macerated for about four days, and aged in old barrels. The extra time in bottle has softened and added complexity to the wine. It’s smoky, spicy, floral, tangy, and tertiary (i.e., shows flavors from bottle aging). There’s a leafy edge that cabernet franc lovers will enjoy. It would be fun to drink with smoked meats or even smoked tofu, amplified by the smoky character of the wine.
