2019 Domaine Wassler Alsace Riesling Grand Cru Frankstein

Regular price $35.00

In Stock: 4

Anne, Marc and Matthieu Wassler are grower-producers in the village of Blienschwiller, 40 kilometers south of Strasbourg. Frankstein is a Grand Cru vineyard with granitic soils that produce savory, salty, high-acid wines. The vines are 60 years old and in conversion to certified organic. The wine ferments and ages in 750-liter oak foudre. It has a terrific, classic nose of flinty stones and white flowers, with just enough of the petrol character that riesling takes on as it ages. This is a textural wine that walks the line between fresh and aged. It’s not bone dry but certainly not even remotely sweet - think of it as properly round, with exactly the right balance of fruit and acidity, roundness and cut. It’s excellent with spicy chile and onion uttapam and sambar from Udupi Palace (in Berkeley and San Francisco), but this is one of those “plays well with others” wines - i.e., with all kinds of dishes from all kinds of Asian countries, as well as with tarte flambée and other onion dishes.
