Winemaking on the Greek island of Crete goes back 4000 years, and its historic origin is said to be in the village of Archanes, 15 kilometers south of the Cretan capital, Heraklion. Archanes is now a Greek PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), or appellation, and Μoinoterra is a new producer there. Vilana is the most important white variety in Crete. Μoinoterra’s version comes from a 500-meter elevation vineyard at the foot of Mount Juktas. It fermented in a combination of stainless steel vats and oak barrels and aged for eight months on the lees. The aromas include citrus, pear, and floral notes. There is some texture and even a little grip in the mouth, with moderate acidity. Try it with fish with lemon and herbs, octopus, or spicy tofu.
