The Alto Adige - or Südtirol (South Tyrol) in German - is an Alpine region just south of Austria in northeast Italy. It was part of Austria until the end of World War I and still very much retains its Südtirolese character in both language and culture. Bolzano/Bozen is the main city, and the main thing to drink there is St. Magdalener, a wine made from majority schiava/vernatsch with a dash of lagrein to give a little more color and structure. The historic and arguably best zone for growing St. Magdalener is in the hills northeast of Bolzano, and wines from there may be designated 'St. Magdalener Classico'. Franz Gojer and his son Florian are part of a long wine tradition at the family’s evocatively-named estate, Glögglhof. Their St. Magdalener Classico is 95% schiava and 5% lagrein fermented and aged in stainless steel. The wine is peppery and tart-red-fruited, with floral and herbal notes to complete the picture. You might say the same of lots of St. Magdaleners, but Gojer’s has an uncommon gravitas and complexity in the mouth. It’s one of those wines that’s easy to drink and also merits more serious exploration, if you’re in that mood. Try it with shaking beef or black pepper tofu.
