Armenian-American Adam Kablanian created Alexandrea Winery in 2017 to valorize and build on Armenia’s 6000-year history of winegrowing. As Adam says, “every bottle is a paradox: old soul, new spirit: global vision, deeply Armenian heart.” This wine, along with Alexandrea’s white blend, is our first foray into Armenian wine, both in the wine club and in the store. So we’re learning, along with you. Areni is Armenia’s signature red variety. Alexandrea’s areni grows in the province of Vayots Dzor, near Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan. It is a pale ruby color. The aromas and flavors are very fresh red fruits, medium-light body, some herbal leafiness, and lovely texture. Pinot noir and sangiovese are Western European analogues, but as with all important indigenous varieties, there is more there there. Barbecue (khorovats in Armenia) seems like a good way to go. The wine is not afraid of spice, so dial it up if you wish.
